Engineered timber diverted from landfill thanks to new BINGO partnership

By Emma Lucey 5 July 2023

Use of engineered timber in construction is rapidly growing in Australia and around the world, creating the need for a circular solution to ensure used timber is diverted from landfill.

Planet Ark Partner and ACE Hub Official Sponsor, BINGO Industries, has entered into an agreement with ReDirect Recycling to supply waste engineered timber to manufacturer of melamine panels, Australian Panels. The waste engineered timber will be utilised in particleboard manufacturing for products such as kitchen cabinets and joinery in Australia.

“This offtake represents an important milestone in diversion of engineered timber waste from landfill, which brings us another step closer to achieving our vision of a waste free Australia,” said Brad Searle, acting Chief Growth Officer at BINGO.

The difference between regular and engineered timber comes from the layering. Where hardwood is a single plank of wood, engineered timber consists of multiple layers and is commonly used for flooring as it’s less susceptible to bowing or warping over time due to its multi-layer design.

This partnership will see engineered timber diverted from landfill and made into products that can also be recycled again at end-of-life for a real circular outcome. This diversion of this waste to landfill by BINGO can abate 49,000 tonnes of CO2 per annum (the equivalent of taking over 10,900 cars off the road each year).

“This is a great example of how industries can work together to achieve sustainable business outcomes and accelerate the transition to a circular economy,” says Searle.
