At this year’s Melbourne Marathon – the largest marathon in Australian history with more than 37,000 participants – the official sustainability partner of the event, Detpak, helped improve its environmental impact by supplying recyclable cups. All water and isotonic drinks were served to runners on the course and at the finish line in Detpak’s RecycleMe paper cups.
The RecycleMe collection and recycling system is proudly endorsed by Planet Ark as an environmentally responsible alternative to single-use cups. The system provides an end-to-end environmental solution for both the cup and the lid, guaranteeing all collected cups and lids are recycled into new products.
The use of RecycleMe cups at the event was a huge success with a 74% collection rate, meaning more than 200,000 used cups were collected for recycling. RecycleMe cups have an innovative mineral-based lining that can be separated from the paper in existing recycling facilities, ensuring the recycled fibres can live again as high-grade paper products.
In an effort to improve the environmental impact of the event, Melbourne Marathon organisers were seeking an environmentally responsible solution for single-use cups.
“Implementing the RecycleMe initiative means that we can celebrate a milestone achievement in taking the important step toward reducing our events’ environmental impact through the process of recycling as many of our paper water cups as possible,” said Melbourne Marathon Festival Director, Marcus Gale.
Planet Ark endorses products and systems that meet strict criteria regarding their environmental outcomes, quality, health benefits and cost-effectiveness. The RecycleMe system guarantees all collected cups are recycled, ensuring the valuable materials are kept circulating within the economy for longer.
