Get your fix of rhythm and recycling with Junkyard Beats!

Whether it be broomsticks, wheelie bins or plastic bags – to the Junkyard Beats group it is music waiting to happen!

The group of nine diversely talented musicians from Earlwood has made a name for itself in recent years with their mix of experimental beats performed on instruments made of ordinary household items.

Their latest project, The Box Show, will be showing as part of the 2018 Sydney Fringe Festival on the 22nd and 29th of September at PACT Theatre in Erskineville. A combination of rhythms, body percussion and comedy, the show follows 4 characters through their daily routine in a world made of carboard boxes and various other ‘junk’.

The performance highlights themes of sustainability, creative recycling and environmental awareness as the musical misfits reinvigorate an array of junk items deemed unworthy by society.

Creative Director Oded Prior began playing the drums when he was 13, soon coming to the realisation that anything can be a drum once you work out how to play it. Following this realisation, it became his mission to not only perform on household items, but also to teach people how to play rhythms on recycled instruments.

We’re all about creative reuse at Planet Ark and Junkyard Beats represents that blend of creativity, sustainability and environmental awareness we love!
