Vacuum Cleaner Recycling Made Easy For Small Businesses

During March 2011, small businesses and individuals can take advantage of an ‘eco-trade campaign’ by Dyson and The Good Guys, to recycle unwanted vacuum cleaners and to make more sustainable product choices.

All you have to do is take your old vacuum cleaner to any The Good Guys store, and in return you’ll receive a voucher from The Good Guys for a 15% discount off the purchase of a brand new Dyson vacuum cleaner. Dyson is taking responsibility for the cost of recycling your old vacuum cleaner, no matter what brand or type.

This one-month ‘eco-trade campaign’ is designed to highlight the need for manufacturers to take responsibility for their own products at end of life, as well as to help local customers make more sustainable product choices.

Each year in Australia millions of electrical appliances make their way to landfill.

Unlike many international markets, including the UK and Europe, companies in Australia are not legally required to take back products from customers once those products reach their end of life.

Dyson, however, already has an established, voluntary take-back scheme where they take responsibility for their products that have reached the end of life. Dyson machines can be returned to Dyson, at no cost to the customer, where they are disassembled and the components recycled.

‘It is important that companies take responsibility for their products at the end of their life by putting in place collection and recycling programs,’ says Brad Gray, Campaigns Manager at Planet Ark. “It’s not yet a legal responsibility but it is a moral one.”
