Recycling Information

General information about recycling materials.

Cars & Other Vehicles

Cars and other vehicles are made up of many useable parts and valuable metals. Recycling these large items is important to preserve landfill space but also for resource recovery.

Chemicals & Liquids

Safe chemical disposal options exist for a large range of everyday chemicals. Commercial recycling services are also available for those chemicals that can be reused such as motor oil.

Clothes & Textiles

Fabrics represent a large investment in water, energy and raw materials. Reuse programs will have the largest environmental benefit.

Construction & Demolition

Common materials such as concrete and bricks can be crushed and recycled, asphalt surfaces repaired and wood pallets reused or refurbished.

Electrical Equipment

The volume of e-waste is growing three times faster than other waste streams. Used electronic equipment contains valuable resources such as precious metals and can be toxic to the environment if placed in landfill.

Food

Australians throw away an estimated three million tonnes of food every year, wasting the resources used to harvest, transport, process and distribute this food. In landfill, food also produces methane, a powerful greenhouse gas.

Food & Beverage Packaging

Packaging is made from a number of different materials, most of which can be collected for recycling. While some councils provide a business recycling service, most commercial recyclers also provide co-mingled recycling bins, for plastic, paper, glass, aluminium and cartons.

Furniture & Fittings

Reusing or recycling furniture and fittings diverts large waste items from landfill and provides others with quality well-priced shop or office pieces.

Garden & Landscape

Garden chemicals like pesticides can contaminate the soil and waterways and they should be disposed of the through chemical collection points or commercial recyclers.

Industrial & Manufacturing

The industrial and manufacturing industry produces large amounts of waste products and many of these can be reused, or recycled.

Lighting

When light bulbs reach the end of the their lifespan, it is important to upgrade to a more efficient bulb and dispose of the old one correctly.

Metals

Making products from recycled metals uses less energy and reduces carbon emissions compared with using raw materials.

Paper & Cardboard

Clean mixed paper and cardboard is recycled into a variety of paper products. Lower grade products can be recycled or composted as organic waste.

Plant & Machinery

Unwanted or broken machinery can be sold to second hand machinery traders. If a machine cannot be refurbished then it can be deconstructed to recover useable parts rather than disposal to landfill or left to become obsolete.

Plastics

Many types of plastics are accepted by commercial recyclers by contract or as part of co-mingled recycling, where they collected, shredded and extruded for use in new plastic products.

Rubber

Common rubber products such as passenger and truck tyres, carpet underlay and even conveyor belts can be recycled into secondary products such as rubber flooring and matting.
