Sometimes it's good to learn from the experiences of others, and when it comes to making your workplace more sustainable, there are lots of examples. Planet Ark's BusinessRecycling team is putting together case studies of workplaces that are leading the way in reducing their impact on the environment.

The Alto Hotel has been on a sustainability journey since 2004. In that time, they have instigated a wide range of green activities, including on-site composting, source separation of waste in rooms, using 100% green power, eliminating disposable toiletry bottles, and much more. They have achieved all this while maintaining the same luxury standards as other comparative hotels.

In the construction industry, many businesses are taking responsibility for their environmental impact and looking for ways to reduce it. The Water Resources Alliance (WRA) in Melbourne, a consortium of businesses working to deliver water related infrastructure, is one example. WRA has integrated sustainability into all levels of their operations, introducing initiatives such as providing all staff with reusable coffee mugs, developing a Sustainability and Environment Policy, and using recycled materials like ‘Green Pipe' made from plastic bags, and recycled crushed glass instead of sand for laying pipes. These and other initiatives mean WRA achieves a monthly waste recycling rate of at least 95%.
